Hartland Construction - Construction Case Studies

Hartland Construction has worked on major construction projects providing a wide range of professional building and construction services.  We provide construction services across Wales, the Midlands, the South and South West of England and also West London.

The following case studies are an example of our previous work in varying settings, including schools, business parks and stadiums.

Upton Court Grammar School

Upton Court Grammar school is a traditionally built school dating back to the 1930s. Bowmer and Kirkland had been employed to totally refurbish the building. Hartland Construction initially won the package for structural alterations.

The structural alterations involved forming 8 new door openings through 335mm thick brick walls. In addition, we fitted lintels, pinned the masonry above and made good the thresholds and plasterwork. The initial package also required us to form an opening in the first-floor slab for the new lift installation and to rebate the floor at ground floor level to take the base of the lift car.

These works were carried out quickly, efficiently and cleanly which gave the site team the confidence to offer us further work, which we won.

The second package involved extensive brickwork repairs and repointing. We also installed one new elevation in new face brickwork. In addition, we undertook the removal of 64 large wooden sash windows, boxing in of beams, making good finishes and building new brick pillars between windows. We also performed diamond drilling and extensive floor sawing for service chases. The works also involved blocking up existing openings and cosmetic repairs to existing stone window sills.

100 Bristol Business Park

The construction project at 100 Bristol Business Park consisted of a fit out project for Bowmer and Kirkland. The property was a disused office and warehouse. The premises were fitted out to take 300 staff, while new premises were being constructed.

Initially, we won the contract to provide the soft strip demolition, carpentry, joinery, ceramic tiling and general building repairs. We were also tasked with fitting high-end kitchens, hygienic lining to locker and shower rooms and some remedial works to existing fire doors. This work was finished one week ahead of schedule and with some value engineering by us, we were able to assist the main contractor with their budget.

We were then successful with phase two which saw our partner company Oliver George Project Management Ltd carry out a dilapidation survey of the site. This included surveying of the roads, footpaths and existing car park of the site. This was followed by appointing a sub-contractor and overseeing the construction of an 83 space car park for the staff.

Hartland Construction Ltd then proceeded to supply and erect 385 linear metres of site hoarding. The hoarding was painted in the contractor’s corporate colours with steel site gates fitted. We then constructed the main contractor’s site office and welfare facilities within the existing warehouse to include meeting rooms, canteen, drying room, first aid room, managers offices, sub-contractors offices, kitchens and toilets. The works were finished, decorated and fitted out ready for occupation.

Bridgwater College Academy ASD Unit refurbishment

We were appointed by our client FP Hurley & Sons Ltd to carry out a fast track refurbishment of the ASD Unit in Bridgwater College Academy in Somerset. The works involved substantial internal structural alterations, new acoustic partitions, acoustic doors, acoustic screens, new suspended ceilings, new floor finishes, toilets and a kitchen. We carried out the works in exemplary fashion, on time and to budget. The standard of work was high, as always which led on to us being awarded the Fire Upgrade Works package on the college where we replaced 35 Fire Doors and carried out various items of passive fire protection above ceilings and in compartments.

Upton Court Grammar School Sports Hall

Further to the success of our works on the main scheme at Upton Court Grammar School we were successful in winning the brickwork package for the new sports hall. This work involved laying 9000 bricks to 1.5M high to the entire perimeter of the building. We also fitted all of the insulation, DPC trays, EPDM barriers and brick tie channels. Topped off with a fire barrier. This work went really well and was completed on time to an excellent standard.
